Joey Davis places 2nd at 5 Counties! 1-16-10

Sophomore Joey Davis continued his remarkable season by placing 2nd at the prestigious Five Counties Tournament in Fountain Valley. Davis, a returning State qualifier is now 28-4 on the season. His accomplishments now are 1st at Westminster, 1st at Edison, 3rd at Reno TOC, and 2nd at North TOC.

Davis went 5-1 over the weekend including a 3-1 victory over David Ferry of Central Catholic who was previously ranked #3 in the State at 135 lbs. Joey also beat Nick Cano of St. Francis high school 10-0 in the quarterfinals. Cano was also ranked as high as #6 in the state rankings. Although, Davis did fall short in the finals against Jake Briggs of Bella Vista, he is sure to be ranked at least #2 in the state going into post season competition.

The rest of the Santa Fe Varsity Wrestling team was had a rough weekend. Only thre other competitors were able to muster a win in this rugged tournament. Justin Irribarren 152 won two matches and lost a two heartbreak decisions to Aaron Lopez of Edison and to Anthony Carmona of Brawley. Both wrestlers that defeated Justin finished 7th and 8th respectively.

Other Chiefs to pick up wines were Nigel Villalobos 140 lbs, and Josh Regalado 189 lbs. Nigel defeated Jose Valdovinos of Santa Ana 10-0 in the first round. He then fell victim to #7 seed Charles Charles of El Dorado. Regalado, defeated Tim Pollard of Rancho Bernado by fall in 3:18. In the 2nd Round Josh was pinned by Aaron Garcia of Cimaron Memorial (Las Vegas) in: 23.

Santa Fe returns to action on Thursday January 21, 2010 when they travel to the Del Rio League rival California High School. Santa Fe is 2-0 in league action and is riding a 32 match win streak. Wrestling is set to begin at 4:00 PM.
